A bitter feud has raged between Stapleford and Great Shelford since about 2010 over which was home to the ancestors of Barack Obama, both laying near equal claim. There is no such feud over which of the two villages nurtured the eponymous childhood Cooke of this estate agency though, Shelford being peculiarly less interested in contesting it.

You don’t have to be world-famous to live in Stapleford though, just a fine judge of what makes a village great. It’s compact, set around a quieter old centre with leafy winding streets, but large enough to still support two pubs, a mini supermarket a primary school, barbers, petrol station, village hall, coffee shop and various other local businesses. It’s also closer to Great Shelford post office and mainline station (London and Cambridge) than many parts of Great Shelford are.

Commuters can whizz into Addenbrooke’s and the city along the DNA cycleway or jump on the regular number 7 bus. For outdoor fans, at the north edge of the village is the Gog Magog Trust land and Wandlebury country park plus a golf course if you absolutely must.
